Having Something to Look Forward To!

Everyone works towards a goal, SEN children are no different. Knowing that they are going to be working towards something makes them more determined.

At the start of my 1:1 sessions I allow the students to pick a symbol/ toy from my reward box, (a tool box filled with different bits and bobs that I know my students are going to be interested in). They place the symbol on my ‘Working Towards’ sign that is always blue-tacked at the edge of the table to be seen.

I purposely have 3 stars on my chart, this is because I aim to do 3 different activities with them. After each activity they place a star on the chart. Once all 3 activities are complete and they have achieved all 3 stars, they are allowed 1-5 minutes with the toy of choice. (I use this time to quickly write up any notes about the session so I am not writing while they are working with me)

Its good to have a 5 minute timer in front of the student so they are able to see how long they have with the toy. If the student does not understand timers when it comes to the end of their time with the toy, count down from 5, you can then verbally and visually (Makaton or Symbol) say that they toy is finished.

This can all be adjusted to suit your child/ student

e.g.

  • More stars for more activities

  • Instead of little toys have a choose board for different games to play

  • Sand Timers, Digital Time or use a clock to show what the time will look like when finished
